Anubhav Sinha addresses criticism over Partition portrayal and PM Modi’s speech omission in Bheed trailer; says ‘I don’t want to distract people’

Bheed trailer: Filmmaker Anubhav Sinha has chosen to focus on the narrative of his upcoming film Bheed, rather than the surrounding controversy. The pandemic-themed drama, which sheds light on the struggles faced by migrants during the 2020 lockdown, has generated polarizing discussions since its first teaser dropped.

Twitter user accused the film of being “anti-India” after watching Bheed trailer

Bheed draws parallels between the hardships endured during Partition and the distressing events of the 2020 lockdown, and the voiceover which exclaims, “Ek baar phir hua tha batwara, 2020 mein,” only amplified the emotions of the teaser. However, the visual unit led to an uproar, with some Twitter users accusing the film of being “anti-India”.

Reports also suggest that Bhushan Kumar, the film’s producer and presenter, distanced himself from the project, resulting in T-Series’ name disappearing from posters and social media tags. Moreover, the trailer initially included a voiceover of Prime Minister Narendra Modi announcing the lockdown, but it was replaced with a new trailer that completely omitted the earlier audio and video.

Anubhav Sinha says ‘I don’t want to distract people’

When questioned about the omission of PM Modi’s voiceover in the new trailer, Sinha stated in an interview with indianexpress.com, “There are more changes in the trailer, but this makes more news for you. Every film goes through various such challenges. In Thappad I wanted to use Amrita Pritam’s poem. I couldn’t use it so one day before the film release, I had to change it.

“It didn’t matter to anybody, why? Did you ask me? I had to overnight write a poem, sync with a Punjabi lip sync. I was in Delhi, Kumud Mishra was dubbing it from Mumbai. I had to write a poem to match Amrita Pritam’s lip sync in Punjabi! That’s an interesting story, not this (removal of PM Modi’s voice over). Let’s talk about Bheed the story. I don’t want to distract people from the story of Bheed, as it’s way more interesting.”
