Renowned actor Vidya Balan has made a name for herself in the Indian film business by taking on unusual characters and giving strong performances. However, she didn't have an easy time rising to fame. Vidya had a lot of rejections in her early years, along with severe criticism regarding her beauty.
Early Struggles and Rejections
When Vidya was a teenager, she began her acting career. Even with her early film roles, she was frequently turned down. She disclosed in an interview that she was replaced in thirteen films. Some producers' impolite actions had a profound effect on her confidence. Her confidence was further damaged when a producer once labelled her "manhoos" (unlucky) when a Malayalam movie was shelved.
Breaking Through and Facing Body Shaming
Vidya's career took a major shift with Parineeta, which was followed by a run of hit flicks. She didn't escape criticism, either, even when she found popularity. Vidya was called "worst dressed" and "overweight" by others, and she also endured taunts over her appearance and weight.
The Turning Point
2010 was a pivotal year in Vidya's professional life. She gave strong performances in films such as No One Killed Jessica and Kahaani. However, the 2013 film The Dirty Picture which took inspiration from Silk Smitha's life became a real game-changer. The first female-led Bollywood film to gross over Rs 100 crore, this picture changed the role of the Hindi cinema heroine while simultaneously catapulting Vidya to new heights. According to Vidya, "The Dirty Picture is a role that changed not just my life but the narrative of the Hindi film heroine."
