However, many actors had a modest beginning before they achieve great heights. This is also true for an actress who used to work for nothing and is currently one of India's top paid actors.

The Model-Turned-Actress Who Made a Mark

Deepika Padukone started her journey as a successful model in her teenage years. By the age of 20, she had already walked the ramp for renowned designers and featured in the prestigious Kingfisher calendar. In 2006, filmmaker Farah Khan signed her for a film titled "Happy New Year." Although the project didn't materialize then, Farah cast Deepika in her next venture.

Breakthrough with Om Shanti Om

Farah's next film was "Om Shanti Om," and she chose Deepika for the female lead opposite Shah Rukh Khan. Eager to work with such big names, Deepika didn’t charge any fees for her debut. This role became her breakthrough in Bollywood. Before "Om Shanti Om," Deepika’s first release was a Kannada film called "Aishwarya."

Championing Mental Health

Deepika has been open about her struggles with mental health. She has been transparent about her struggle with depression and her recovery process. She has emphasised several times, both in interviews and events, how critical it is to treat mental health concerns. In 2016, she was appointed as the Indian Psychiatric Society's brand ambassador. Her charity started a campaign to assist depression sufferers and survivors on the occasion of its first anniversary.

From No Fees to Top Billing

In 2024, Deepika Padukone is among the highest-paid actresses in India. She costarred alongside Hrithik Roshan in the recent movie "Fighter." For her upcoming movie, "Kalki 2898 AD," Deepika has raised her remuneration to Rs 20 crore, according to trade expert Manobala Vijayabalan. With performers like Prabhas, Amitabh Bachchan, and Kamal Haasan, and directed by Nag Ashwin, the film is set to be India's most expensive production and slated for a June release.
