Filmmaker Christopher Nolan is mourning the loss of his uncle, veteran actor John Nolan, who passed away at the age of 87. He died on Saturday, April 11, as per reports from a local British publication.

John Nolan had a long career in theatre, television and films. He built his own identity as an actor over the years. At the same time, he became popular for working in projects by his nephews, Christopher Nolan and Jonathan Nolan.

He is survived by his wife, actress Kim Hartman, whom he married in 1975. He also leaves behind his children, Miranda and Tom, and grandchildren Dylan and Kara.

Christopher Nolan Pays Tribute To John Nolan

Christopher Nolan shared an emotional message while remembering his uncle. He spoke about how John Nolan shaped his early understanding of art and acting. He said to media, “My uncle John was the first artist I knew, and he taught me more than anyone about the search for truth in acting and the joys of creative achievement.”

He further added, “I miss him terribly, but take great comfort in my memories of John, particularly those of working together.”

Their bond was very strong and not just a family relationship. They also shared a deep connection through cinema and storytelling.

Christopher And John’s Journey In Films

John Nolan appeared in several films and shows linked to Christopher Nolan and Jonathan Nolan. Even in smaller roles, he left a strong impact. He is best known for playing Douglas Fredericks in Batman Begins and The Dark Knight Rises. Both films starred Christian Bale and were major hits. He also worked in Christopher Nolan’s early film Following, where he played a policeman. Later, he appeared as the Blind Man in Dunkirk.

On television, John Nolan became widely known for his role as John Greer in Person of Interest, created by Jonathan Nolan. He joined the show in its second season and continued till its final season in 2016.

Born in Westminster, London, John Nolan started his career in theatre. He worked with the Royal Shakespeare Company before moving to television and films. He also acted in the BBC miniseries Daniel Deronda in 1970.

Apart from acting, he worked as a theatre director and teacher at Stratford College. Many young actors learned from him. His final role came in 2024 in the series Dune Prophecy, where he played the Speaker of the High Council.
