Christopher Nolan Turns 52: Looking Back at His Best characters

Christopher Nolan CBE is a renowned British-American film director, producer, and screenwriter, producing hits like Inception and the Dark Knight Trilogy. His films have grossed more than US$5 billion worldwide and have earned 11 Academy Awards from 36 nominations.

Considered not just a film director, writer, and creator, he is also regarded as a cinematic institution in himself since his film style is in a league of its own. On his 52nd birthday, we look at the five most remarkable and memorable of his characters.

1. Dr. Jonathan Crane

Currently working on his sixth collaboration with actor Cillian Murphy in the upcoming film Oppenheimer, the duo’s most memorable partnership remains their maiden one. In Batman Begins, Crane was main antagonist, a villain who personifies the concept of evil, wreaking havoc in Gotham City with fear toxins. Murphy also reprised his role in sequel films The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises.

2. The Joker

Film Junkies would say that to talk about the genius of Nolan and not mention the Joker would be sacrilegious. The Joker is everything you expect of a bonafide evil person: smart, cold, calculative, and always a couple steps ahead. After Heath Ledger’s tragic demise, several actors have brought the character to life, but cinephiles overwhelmingly agree that the magic brewed by Nolan and Ledger remains unparalleled.

3. Robert Angier

Robert Angier, portrayed by Wolverine’s Hugh Jackman, appeared in Nolan’s 2006 film The Prestige. Set in the 19th century, the film chronicles the intense rivalry between two magicians, both of whom lock horns to create the most impressive illusion. Angier is best remembered for his fall from grace, as he goes from being charming and likable to dark, brooding, and overambitious as the plot progresses.

4. Leonard Shelby

Nolan referred to the 2000 mystery-thriller Memento as a “strange cousin” of Funes the Memorious, a short story penned by Jorge Luis Borges. The movie tells the story of an insurance investigator who suffers from anterograde amnesia. Leonard Shelby, played by Guy Pearce, is one of Nolan’s most memorable and intriguing characters since Nolan effectively spun a complex web of lies, illusion, deceit, and suspense around him.

5. Dom Cobb

Dom Cobb, played by Leonardo DiCaprio, is the lead protagonist of the hit movie Inception. Cobb is part of a heist group that infiltrates people’s dreams. The fantastical setting of the film is, naturally, quite far removed from ours. Despite that, one will find themselves rooting for Cobb.
