Cinematograph Act, 1952 amendments approved

The Cinematograph (Amendment) Bill 2023 will, in essence, make it illegal to record and show films in movie theatres without permission. Additionally, the government is now able to prohibit websites that disseminate illegal movie copies.

Vani Tripathi Tikoo, a member of the Central Board of Film Certification, explains, “This was much-needed. I have often argued that the Act needs to be amended since both the content and the character of the law have changed. In actuality, it ought to be illegal and punishable as a crime. You need to understand that film piracy has been linked to cartel industries all over the world, including the mafia and drug cartels in numerous nations.

Boney Kapoor reacted to the amendments

Boney Kapoor, the producer of the 2022 Tamil film Valimai, which was promptly posted online by pirates following its release, called it a much-needed, positive step and said “since a producer’s money is on the line when a movie is made, makers, especially producers, have welcomed the amendment.” “This will help to curb the menace of film piracy and introduce age-based categories for certification for uniform categorization of films across all platforms,” said Shibasish Sarkar, president of the Producers Guild of India.
