Citadel review: Barring Priyanka Chopra, there is not much to Prime Video's expensive but uninspiring new series Citadel. It begins with high octane action sequence. A superfast train hurtles across the Italian Alps. Two elite spies trained to tame warmongers are on a mission. Also on the train is a Russian agent carrying highly enriched uranium. As the two clash with the Russian, one false move could spell big trouble for them. It does.
PeeCee all spunk and flair
Priyanka Chopra is all spunk and flair while Richard Madden is understated.
Priyanka looks stunning whether in stylish dresses or rags, a delight to watch. She pulls off crisp action sequences like a pro but the show still seems insipid.
The show looks fine, but in parts: actors' performances, simple plot, slick action, choreography, sets and locations. Yet, the fails to rise above getting an average score.
It’s an espionage drama, something that we have seen many times before and that’s the flaw. Citadel fails to find a distinct heart in the early parts. We have seen it all - silly spy tech, the retrograde amnesia, the nuclear codes in a briefcase, or the villain barking orders to her henchmen. There is nothing new in it.
Reminds of Quantico
From the first two episodes, it may be early to pass a verdict. Executive producers Russo Brothers are known for some remarkable work. But sadly, Citadel’s first impression is of a generic quality with Quantico flashbacks.
In Citadel two spies Nadia Sinh (Priyanka Chopra Jonas) and her partner Mason Kane (Richard Madden) lose their memory and spend 8 years away from action. And then a black briefcase bring them together again.
In between all this are impressive action pieces and that’s where Priyanka comes on top. She is more easily retained than watching Richard thrashing baddies. She is undeniably the action hero. But she overdoes the part of being cool or flirty.
Citadel is being called one of Amazon Prime Video's most expensive shows ever. But have they put that money to good use? Doubtful!
