The battle at the box office between Rajinikanth’s Coolie and Hrithik Roshan–Jr NTR’s War 2 has entered its second week, and the numbers show a clear trend. While both films opened with huge fanfare, collections have nosedived within eight days, leaving Coolie in the lead and War 2 struggling to match expectations.
Coolie Box Office Collection Day 8
Directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, Coolie had a massive debut on August 14, earning Rs 65 crore on opening day. Like many star-driven South films, it was front-loaded, with fans flocking to theatres on the first day. By Day 8, the film collected just Rs 6.2 crore across India, roughly a tenth of its opening-day earnings.
According to Sacnilk, the domestic total now stands at Rs 230 crore. Worldwide, Coolie has passed Rs 450 crore and is likely to approach the Rs 500 crore mark over the weekend. Despite the strong start, poor word-of-mouth has prevented it from overtaking Rajinikanth’s 2023 hit Jailer, which crossed Rs 600 crore globally.
Lokesh Kanagaraj has built a strong reputation with his action-thriller universe, including Kaithi, Vikram, and Leo. However, Coolie is a standalone film, which may have left some fans expecting a bigger universe tie-in slightly disappointed. Still, Rajinikanth remains a powerful draw, and the film now targets Rs 250 crore in domestic collections by the end of its second week.

War 2 Box Office Collection Day 8
Ayan Mukerji-directed Hrithik Roshan, Jr NTR, and Kiara Advani starrer began with Rs 52 crore on the opening day. On Day 8, it had earned just Rs 5 crore, taking its domestic total to Rs 204.25 crore. Worldwide, the film stands at Rs 306 crore. Sacnilk reports that the Hindi version earned Rs 146.4 crore and the Telugu version Rs 51.3 crore. The Telugu version, in particular, has underperformed at the box office.
Occupancy figures show the struggle: in Delhi-NCR, shows ran at roughly 9 percent occupancy, while Mumbai theatres saw about 10 percent. In Hyderabad, the Telugu version reached 15 percent occupancy, and Visakhapatnam saw 20 percent.
War 2 India Box Office
War 2 was launched as part of YRF’s spy universe, following hits like Pathaan and Tiger 3. However, it has failed to match their success. Tiger 3 earned Rs 229.9 crore in the first eight days, and Pathaan made Rs 348.5 crore, later surpassing Rs 500 crore globally. Even the 2019 War made Rs 228.55 crore in eight days.

With new releases like Param Sundari coming next week, War 2 still has limited time to boost collections. It appears unlikely the film will surpass Tiger 3 or YRF’s Saiyaara, marking it as the first notable flop in the YRF spy universe.
