The Dadasaheb Phalke awards 2021 was aired on 20 February. The award honoured artistes for their contribution to Indian cinema and television. Akshay Kumar and Deepika Padukone bagged the awards for Best Actor and Best Actress respectively.
Deepika won the award for her role in Meghna Gulzar's Chhapaak, the movie that followed the story of an acid-attack survivor. Vikrant Massey won the award for Best Actor in a Supporting Role for the same. Akshay Kumar received the award for his role in Laxmii.
While the nation continues to feel the void left by late Bollywood actor Sushant Singh Rajput, one of the country's most eminent awards in entertainment, Dadasaheb Phalke Award, has honoured the star with the 'Critic's Best Actor' accolade in the prestigious award ceremony.
Sushant Singh Rajput, who began his acting career in 2008 with the TV show 'Kis Desh Mein Hai Meraa Dil', became a household name when he grabbed the lead role in Zee TV's 'Pavitra Rishta' opposite Ankita Lokhande. Soon after he reached the peak of his career he left the television industry to test his coin in the Hindi film industry.
The best film honour went to Ajay Devgn-Saif Ali Khan starrer Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior, which also ended up becoming the highest box-office grosser of 2020. Co-starring Kajol, the period film was directed by debutante Om Raut and produced by T-Series.
Anurag Basu was honoured as the best director for his black comedy, Ludo, featuring an ensemble cast, including Abhishek Bachchan, Sanya Malhotra, Rajkummar Rao and Fatima Sana Shaikh. Radhika Madan bagged the best actor in a supporting role award for her performance in Homi Adajani’s dramedy Angrezi Medium, co-starring late Irrfan Khan.
The Dadasaheb Phalke Award is India's highest award in cinema. It is presented annually at the National Film Awards ceremony by the Directorate of Film Festivals, an organisation set up by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting. The recipient is honoured for their "outstanding contribution to the growth and development of Indian cinema" and is selected by a committee consisting of eminent personalities from the Indian film industry.
