Dhurandhar: ‘Martyr Is NOT A Commercial Commodity…’ Army Officer’s Family Files Case Against Ranveer Singh Starrer, Demands Stay On Release

Major Mohit Sharma’s parents have moved the Delhi high court seeking a stay on Dhurandhar, alleging the film uses elements of the martyr’s life without permission.

The controversy around Dhurandhar has now reached the Delhi High Court. The parents of Late Major Mohit Sharma have filed a petition asking for an urgent stay on the film’s release. They say the makers have used parts of their son’s life without permission.

Major Mohit Sharma was an Ashoka Chakra and Sena Medal awardee. He served with 1 Para (Special Forces) and took part in covert counter-terror operations in Kashmir. His parents believe the film shows scenes that look similar to his missions. They feel the story is being used for commercial gain without approval from them or the Indian Army.

Case Filed Against Ranveer Singh Starrer Dhurandhar

As reported by TOI, the petition says that the family was “deeply shaken” when they learnt that the makers had “used, portrayed, fictionalised and commercially exploited” their son’s life “without seeking, obtaining, or even attempting to obtain” permission. They describe themselves as “humble and grieving parents” and tell the Court that “a martyr is not a commercial commodity.”

The family says people online and media reports have already linked the trailer to Major Sharma’s undercover work. But no one from the film’s team contacted them for facts or consent. They also say this raises concerns about privacy, dignity and reputation under Article 21.

The plea mentions that some of Major Sharma’s missions “remain classified in nature.” They argue that any wrong or unauthorised portrayal could even harm national security. They also question whether the makers sought mandatory clearance from the Additional Directorate General of Public Information (ADGPI). This approval is required for films showing military uniforms, insignia or counter-terror operations.

Will Delhi HC Halt The Film’s Release?

The petition names the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, CBFC, ADGPI, director Aditya Dhar and Jio Studios. The family is represented by advocates Roopenshu Pratap Singh and Manish Sharma of Samaanta Law Firm. They are asking the Court to stop the film’s release on December 5. They also want a private screening, access to the script and raw footage, and a halt on any promotions until the case is heard.

The family further wants the Court to state that any film based on a real military martyr must take permission from both the Army and the legal heirs.

The case may be heard next week. The outcome could set an important example for films based on military heroes in the future.

Dhurandhar Director Aditya Dhar Recently Issued Clarification

Director Aditya Dhar recently replied on X after Major Sharma’s brother tagged him. Dhar denied any link between the film and the officer’s life.

He wrote, “Hi, sir – Our film Dhurandhar is not based on the life of braveheart Major Mohit Sharma AC(P) SM. This is an official clarification. I assure you, if we do make a biopic on Mohit Sir in the future, we will do it with full consent and in complete consultation with the family, and in a way that truly honours his sacrifice for the nation and the legacy it has left for all of us.”

Dhurandhar stars Ranveer Singh, Arjun Rampal, Sanjay Dutt, Akshaye Khanna and child actor Sara Arjun. The release now depends on the court’s decision.
