Gaslight Movie Review: Vikrant Massey, Chitrangada Singh shine in Sara Ali Khan-starrer

Gaslight Movie Review: Director Pavan Kirpalani loves to mix psychological issues with elements of horror and suspense in a dark setting. He did that in Phobia and has done it again in Gaslight. A paraplegic woman is convinced her father is dead and she is being gaslit into insanity. While the concept is good and should have held the film together but its execution has failed. Gaslight falls flat, riddling itself with tired tropes from Bollywood thrillers of the past.

A young woman (Sara Ali Khan), returns home after 15 years to reconcile with her father, but finds him missing. Strange things are happening in the estate and that create suspicion in her mind about her father’s whereabouts. She finds she is being manipulated by a few individuals who can go to any extent to grab the estate.

Visually appealing film

There are a few sequences that will keep you on the edge of your seat. The haunting background music enhances the look and feel of the film. Camera work and cinematography is extremely well and so is the production design. The film has a dark and grungy setting in the visually appealing film.

But the same can not be said about the screenplay. It’s slow and hence boring. The story lacks thrills and chills. It is predictable and fails to get ahead of the viewers. The climax too falls flat and you are bound to feel let down.

Sara Ali Khan is restrained

Sara Ali Khan has done reasonably well and is quite restrained. But she fails to get under the skin of her character. She could have done better.

It’s Vikrant Massey and Chitrangada Singh who shine with their strong performances in this slow paced film. Chitrangada as the femme fatale is both conniving and vulnerable. Other actor including Akshay Oberoi and Rahul Dev have limited scope and don’t really stand.

Gaslight suffers from severe pacing issues and you may want to hit the pause button after the first 30 minutes.
