Happy Patel Review: Vir Das has taken a bold step with Happy Patel: Khatarnak Jasoos, a spy comedy he both directs and stars in. Produced by Aamir Khan Productions, the film released on January 16, 2026, after quirky promotional videos, including one with Sunil Grover parodying Aamir Khan, went viral. While the promos created curiosity, early audience reactions show that viewers are divided over the film.

Happy Patel Review: Here’s What Early Viewers Said About Vir Das Starrer

Designed as an absurd, over-the-top spy spoof, Happy Patel tries to deliver madcap comedy in the vein of cult classics. However, many viewers feel the execution falls short. Some called the film uneven and tiring, saying that while the idea sounded fun on paper, it became exhausting to watch. Critics online said the jokes often did not land and the absurdity failed to translate into real comedy. Despite Vir Das’ energetic performance, the script limits his impact.

While the premise promised dark comedy and thrills, some viewers said most of the film falls apart after a point. Scenes drag on, and the love track with Mithila Palkar tests patience, though her presence is appreciated.

In their Happy Patel review post, some viewers said the comedy is risky but works for those who enjoy absurd humour. Vir Das’ understanding of the chaotic style keeps parts of the film entertaining. The cameos of Imran Khan and Aamir Khan also grabbed attention. Imran’s return as a supermodel works in parts, while Aamir’s brief cameo adds a fun moment, even if it feels functional.

Check out the reactions below!

About The Film

The story follows Happy Patel, a clumsy British spy of Indian origin who has failed to join MI7 multiple times. He is sent on a mission to Goa to rescue a scientist from a crime lord known as Mama, getting entangled in a chaotic criminal network.

Running just under two hours and rated A for adult content, Happy Patel: Khatarnak Jasoos features a strong ensemble cast including Mithila Palkar, Mona Singh, Sharib Hashmi, and Srushti Tawade. Vir Das shines as the actor, but many feel his directorial debut shows room for improvement. Fans of madcap, chaotic comedy may enjoy it, but others may find it uneven and exhausting.
