Indira Gandhi: Vidya Balan’s wish to play the role of Mrs. Indira Gandhi, India’s first woman Prime Minister, has come to a standstill. In a web series which was to be produced by Vidya’s husband Siddharth Roy Kapur, she was slated to play Mrs. Gandhi. The series was touted to be based on the highly regarded book about Mrs. Gandhi by renowned television journalist Sagarika Ghose. Reliable sources claim that the project has been aborted after three years after it was first announced.
Vidya Balan’s Indira Gandhi Project Shelved
It was announced in 2019 that Vidya will essay the role of the former Prime Minister in an ambitious project. The actor had also expressed her willingness to spearhead the project. However, ETimes has no reported that project has been shelved. A source close to the actor told the publication, “Making biopics on controversial political figures is not conducive to the current political climate. With Kangana Ranaut playing Mrs Gandhi, it makes no sense for Vidya Balan to go down that dangerous road.”
The project for which Hridaynath Mangeshkar was to compose the music was conceptualised by script writer Kamleshwar, who also penned the script for Aandhi (which was also based on Mrs. Gandhi, hence the rhyme in the title). The movie was intended to be a biography of Indira Gandhi. putting a lot of focus on objectivity. The movie was planned to focus on Indira’s personal life as well as her political career.
Kangana Ranaut’s Emergency
Kangana Ranaut is all set to essay the character of Indira Gandhi in her upcoming film Emergency. Anupam Kher, Satish Kaushik and Mahima Chaudhry have also joined the upcoming film. Kangana had earlier shared the teaser of the project. Bankrolled by Kangana’s Manikarnika Films, the release date of the film is yet to be announced.
