Javed Akhtar urges early hearing of defamation case against Kangana Ranaut

Actress Kangana Ranaut has been ordered by the Andheri magistrate court in Mumbai to respond to a request for an early hearing of a defamation case against her, filed by Bollywood lyricist Javed Akhtar. On Monday, Akhtar’s attorney Jay Bharadwaj filed a motion alleging that the court has been awaiting a decision on his suit against Ranaut since 2020. The application indicated that the complainant, a 78-year-old senior person, had been actively pursuing the issue.

The next hearing date is April 19, 2023

The court was informed by Bharadwaj that the case’s next hearing date is set for April 19, 2023, while the most recent hearing date was November 23, 2022. “The complainant is a senior person. It would be in the interest of justice that the date of the matter fixed on 19/04/2023 may kindly be preponed,” Akhtar’s appeal said, pointing to the case’s nearly five-month-long adjournment.

Because Akhtar has already testified in court, section 311 of the Criminal Procedure Code requires the court to call witnesses. Courts have the authority under this clause to call important witnesses or question those in attendance. On Monday, Bharadwaj emphasised that the case has been ongoing for more than two years and that Akhtar has endured unbearable pain as a result of the accusations made by the accused.

Kangana Ranaut to give her response to Javed Akhtar’s application

The Metropolitan Magistrate requested that Ranaut provide her response to Akhtar’s application by February 20 after briefly hearing Bharadwaj.

Ranaut was the subject of a complaint by Akhtar, who claimed that she had defamed him on television in 2020. Ranaut, on the other hand, had asserted that Akhtar had no right to stand in the way of their relationship. She said that in March 2016, Akhtar arranged a meeting and attempted to intimidate her. She also complained about Akhtar for the same meeting in 2016 and said that Akhtar was pressuring her to apologise.
