About The Film
The film is set in pre-colonial Karnataka and explores the origins of Daiva worship in Tulunadu. It traces its roots back to the fourth-century Kadamba dynasty. Rishab Shetty plays Berme, the protector of the Kantara forest and its tribal community. The film also features Rukmini Vasanth, Gulshan Devaiah, and Jayaram in key roles.
Produced by Hombale Films, Kantara Chapter 1 has found success both in India and abroad. The makers reportedly plan to submit it for Oscar consideration to bring this Indian story to a global audience. Since its release on October 2, the film has earned nearly Rs 700 crore worldwide, placing it among the top-grossing Indian films of 2025.
However, reports claim that profitability is still some distance away. Industry trackers like Great Andhra and Mana Telugu have stated that due to high production and distribution costs, Kantara Chapter 1 might not make a profit for Hombale Films until it hits Rs 900 crore globally. The reports compared it to Rajinikanth’s Coolie, which made over Rs 500 crore but earned minimal profit.
For now, Kantara Chapter 1 continues to attract audiences with strong word-of-mouth and fan support. Whether it reaches the Rs 500 crore mark in India and Rs 900 crore worldwide remains to be seen.
