Karuppu Performs Better Than Suriya’s Recent Films

Karuppu has already outperformed several of Suriya’s recent releases at the Indian box office. The film has comfortably crossed the lifetime earnings of Etharkkum Thunindhavan, which had earned Rs 49.10 crore net during its full run.

It has also surpassed the collections of Kanguva, which reportedly earned Rs 70.37 crore net in India. Meanwhile, Retro had collected Rs 60.58 crore in its lifetime.

Trade analysts believe the film’s strong performance in Tamil Nadu is driving its success, while the Telugu dubbed version is performing comparatively lower.

About The Film

Directed by RJ Balaji, Karuppu is a Tamil-language action drama with a unique courtroom fantasy setup. The story revolves around a poor father and daughter who lose their gold savings meant for an urgent medical procedure. After facing corruption inside the legal system, the grieving father prays to the folk deity Vettai Karuppu for justice.

The deity later takes human form as lawyer Saravanan, played by Suriya, and enters the courtroom to challenge the corrupt legal network controlled by Baby Kannan.

The film features a strong supporting cast including Trisha Krishnan, Indrans, Swasika, Sshivada, Natty Subramaniam and Anagha Maaya Ravi. Interestingly, director RJ Balaji himself plays the film’s main antagonist.

Karuppu was reportedly mounted on a large-scale budget of nearly Rs 130 crore. Even before release, the film recovered a major portion of its investment through digital and satellite rights deals worth over Rs 110 crore. Industry insiders believe the film now needs to cross nearly Rs 150 crore globally to emerge as a major commercial success.
