Vijay Deverakonda, once hailed for his hit roles in Arjun Reddy and Geetha Govindam, is hoping to bounce back with his latest release, Kingdom. Also titled Saamrajya in Hindi, this spy action thriller hit theatres today and marks one of the actor's most crucial projects in years. After five back-to-back underperforming films, all eyes are on Kingdom to see if it can finally turn the tide.

Kingdom Review: Early Response From Netizens Brings Hope For Vijay Deverakonda

Directed by Jersey filmmaker Gowtam Tinnanuri, Kingdom opened to packed houses. Fans were excited to see if this could be Vijay’s long-awaited comeback. Initial reactions online are mostly positive. Many viewers have praised his emotional performance and screen presence, calling it his best in recent years. While some pointed out a few slow parts in the narrative, others felt the strong visuals and sincere storytelling made up for it.

One user wrote, “The Kingdom has its high points, but man, this Vijay guy is damn good. Watch it for him, people.”

Another said, “Kingdom does not work for me. This over-the-top action and overacting is certainly not my kind of cinema.”

A third user said, “Kingdom is a beautifully crafted film with sincere performances and rich visuals. Despite a few narrative dips without any emotional highs, it remains a good experience and is definitely worth watching.”

Vijay Deverakonda’s Flop Run Before Kingdom

The buzz around Kingdom is amplified by Vijay’s recent string of disappointments. It began with Dear Comrade in 2019, which failed to recover its budget. Then came World Famous Lover in 2020, which also received negative feedback and low audience turnout.

In 2022, his pan-India debut Liger (backed by Karan Johar) had high expectations but ended up being a critical and commercial disaster. In 2023, Kushi, co-starring Samantha Ruth Prabhu, started strong but couldn't maintain momentum due to weak writing. Most recently, The Family Star in 2024, opposite Mrunal Thakur, failed to impress despite its big budget and promotional push.

At a concert promoting Kushi, Vijay himself confessed, “I don’t remember when was the last time I gave a good film.”

Can Kingdom Turn Things Around?

Kingdom is produced by Naga Vamsi and Sai Soujanya under Sithara Entertainments and Fortune Four Cinemas. The film also stars Satyadev and Bhagyashree Borse in key roles. With music by Anirudh Ravichander, impressive visuals, and a spy thriller setup, Kingdom is designed to appeal to a wide audience.

If positive word-of-mouth holds strong through the weekend, Kingdom could finally revive Vijay Deverakonda’s career. Though it’s early to call it a major hit, the signs are optimistic. For now, Kingdom seems like the right step towards breaking the flop cycle and rebuilding Vijay’s box office status.
