Rajkummar Rao is stepping into a deadly new avatar in Maalik, and the trailer is finally out. Set in a raw, crime-heavy North Indian setting, the film shows him as a ruthless gangster hungry for power and revenge.
Read on to what what the latest glimpse brings.
What’s In Maalik Trailer?
The trailer introduces Rajkummar as Maalik, a fierce man with a painful past. He leads his gang with bullets and rage, and as he rises in power, he sets his sights on politics.
The two-minute and 46-second-long trailer opens in a lawless town soaked in blood and fear. Rajkummar plays Maalik, a man who rises from a tragic past to become a feared gangster with political ambitions. His control over the streets grows stronger, but with that, so do the threats. Local rivals and political enemies begin plotting to bring him down. Warning his enemies, he says, “Main goli se sheher gira doonga.”
Manushi Chhillar joins Rao in a key role. The cast also includes Saurabh Shukla, Prosenjit Chatterjee, Huma Qureshi, and Swanand Kirkire. Directed by Pulkit (known for Bhakshak and Bose: Dead/Alive), Maalik seems to follow the popular gangster-politics theme seen in shows like Mirzapur.
The trailer is packed with guns, gang wars, and political ambition. Sharing it online on Instagram, Rajkummar wrote, “Janam se nahin Qismat se banega, majboor baap ka mazboot beta, Maalik. Trailer out now”
Rajkummar Rao’s New Phase After Stree 2
Maalik marks a shift in Rajkummar’s film choices. After the huge success of Stree 2 (which made nearly Rs 600 crore), this film sees him playing a more massy, grey character. His recent films, Vicky Vidya Ka Woh Wala Video and Bhool Chuk Maaf, had mixed results, with only the latter doing fairly well at the box office.
Now, he’s going bold with a violent, political thriller that could change how audiences see him. Will Maalik live up to the hype or repeat what OTT already offers? That remains to be seen.
Maalik releases in cinemas on July 11.
