Prince Harry and Meghan Markle to produce exclusive content for Netflix

Prince Harry and his wife, Meghan Markle, on Wednesday signed a megawatt deal with Over the Top streaming giant, Netflix, to produce exclusive content.

Under the deal, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex will create documentary series, feature films, scripted shows and children’s programming via their unnamed production company.

Harry and Meghan, who recently bought a home in Montecito, California, have joined other public figures including the former US president Barack Obama and his wife, Michelle, in producing content for the streaming platform.

“Our lives, both independent of each other and as a couple, have allowed us to understand the power of the human spirit, of courage, resilience and the need for connection,” the couple said in a statement.

“Through our work with diverse communities and their environments, to shining a light on people and causes around the world, our focus will be on creating content that informs but also gives hope. As new parents, making inspirational family programming is also important to us, as is powerful storytelling through a truthful and relatable lens,” they added.

The Sussexes have reportedly started holding meetings with a number of Hollywood studios since moving to California this year. Meghan, who is known for her stint in the popular drama ‘Suits’, said that they intend to create content that gives them “unprecedented reach” to share “impactful content that unlocks action.”

“Harry and Meghan have inspired millions of people all around the world with their authenticity, optimism and leadership,” said Ted Sarandos, a co-chief executive and the chief content officer at Netflix. “We’re incredibly proud they have chosen Netflix as their creative home – and are excited about telling stories with them that can help build resilience and increase understanding for audiences everywhere,” he added.

While Meghan has had a successful acting career before meeting to Prince Harry, she has made it clear that she doesn’t intend to return to acting.

Earlier this year in January, Prince Harry and Meghan gave up their royal titles. In an Instagram post, the couple mentioned that they wanted: to work to become financially independent, while continuing to support the Queen.

Notably, the Royal officials ‘will examine Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s Netflix deal’ as the couple agreed to seek approval from the royals before starting any commercial venture.
