Priyanka Chopra: In an expose, actor Priyanka Chopra has revealed that colour discrimination is a reality in Bollywood. The dusky diva said she was lightened up in Hindi movies. People with fair skin have a definite advantage during casting, she said.
Priyanka Chopra won Miss World pageant in 2000 before she established herself as a highly popular actor in Bollywood. But she had a tough journey and ultimately left the industry. She moved to Hollywood and established herself there.
Dark side of Bollywood
The Citadel actor has now opened up on the dark side of Bollywood and why she left the industry. In a conversation with Dax Shepherd in the latest episode of his podcast Armchair Expert, PeeCee revealed how she was lightened up in films because of her dusky skin.
The actor said color discrimination is normal in the industry. She recalled being considered dusky during the initial stage of her career when didn’t even know the meaning of the term.
She was lightened up for her roles with makeup and then blast lighting and was called ‘the black cat’. Priyanka recalled she was lightened for a song and it was called ‘Chitti Dudh kudi’ which means a girl who is as white as milk.
Fairness creams extremely damaging
In the podcast, PeeCee confessed that she regrets working for fairness cream ads. She realized later that it was extremely damaging. However, she had to do the fairness cream ad because a beauty brand is considered a big part of an actress’ trajectory. And all major beauty brands were selling those creams, she said.
Priyanka Chopra will be next seen in the Russo Brothers spy thriller series Citadel which will stream on Amazon Prime Video on April 28. She also features in American romantic comedy Love Again scheduled to release on May 12.
Priyanka will also make a comeback in Bollywood with Farhan Akhtar’s Jee Le Zaraa which also stars Katrina Kaif and Alia Bhatt.
