The sudden death of veteran producer RB Choudary has left the Indian film industry in shock. The 76-year-old filmmaker died on May 5, 2026 after a tragic road accident in Rajasthan. A towering figure in South Indian cinema, RB Choudary was widely respected for his sharp eye for talent and strong storytelling instincts.
The accident reportedly took place near Jhoontha village in Rajasthan’s Beawar district while he was returning from a family wedding. His car lost control after cattle strayed onto the road and crashed into a roadside wall. While his driver survived with serious injuries and was taken to Jodhpur for treatment, RB Choudary died on the spot. His mortal remains are currently in Udaipur and will be brought to Chennai, where family, friends and members of the film fraternity will pay their final respects.

He was also a rare mentor in the industry. RB Choudary introduced more than 34 debutant directors, including well-known filmmakers like K. S. Ravikumar and Vikraman. Many of these directors went on to shape mainstream South Indian cinema.
Importantly, RB Choudary played a crucial role in building the mass image of Vijay. Films like Poove Unakkaga and Thullatha Manamum Thullum are often credited with giving Vijay his breakthrough and connecting him with family audiences.
Tributes poured in from across the industry after his death. Rajinikanth called him a “top-notch producer” and a “wonderful human being.” Pawan Kalyan remembered their collaboration on Suswagatham, praising his commitment to meaningful cinema, while Chiranjeevi also expressed deep condolences.
The 100th Film Dream Left Incomplete
Even after a long and successful career, RB Choudary had one major dream left. He was planning his 100th film as a grand project with Vijay. The idea was first hinted at by his son Jiiva in 2018. The film was expected to mark a historic milestone in his journey.
However, with his sudden passing, this ambitious project will now remain unfinished. It stands as a reminder of the vision he still carried even after decades in the industry.

Over the years, he also earned multiple honours, including Filmfare Awards and Tamil Nadu State Film Awards.
