Sameer Khakhar, who played Khopdi in TV show Nukkad, passes away at 71

Sameer Khakhar: Veteran actor Sameer Khakhar, best known for his role of Khopri in the television series Nukkad, passed away on March 15. His brother Ganesh Khakhar confirmed the news. He was 71.

Sameer Khakkar was having trouble breathing and was unwell for the last few days. Ganesh said suffered multiple organ failure and died at MM Hospital, in Mumbai's Borivali, where he was admitted. His funeral will be held at Babhai naka crematorium, Borivali.

Hansal Mehta pays tribute

Taking to Twitter, filmmaker Hansal Mehta shared pictures of Sameer and paid his tribute. He wrote, “For some reason I was nicknamed Khopdi in college after his iconic character in Nukkad. My closest friends from the time still call me Khopdi. But I guess it’s time to say goodbye to the OG. Goodbye Sameer Khakhar. Thank you for the memories.”

In his 38 years of acting career Sameer appeared in a number of TV episodes and movies. The actor had relocated to the United States after a brief hiatus from show business. He also acted in two Gujarati plays.

Played Jai Ho in Salman Khan film

The actor worked films as well and made a name for himself as the popular Jai Ho character in Salman Khan's movie.

Some of his popular shows include Manorajan, Circus, Naya Nukkad, Shrimaan Shrimati, and Adaalat. He acted in many films like Parinda, Eena Meena Deeka, Dilwale, Raja Babu, Terror Hi Terror, Return of Jewel Teef, Shahanshaan, Awwal Number, Pyaye Deewana Hota Hai, Hum Hain Kamal Ke.

He was last seen in the movie Sanjivani, which also starred Surbhi Chandna and Namit Khanna.
