Pathaan: Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan on Thursday addressed the matter of social media toxicity and cancel culture, sending out a plea for "positivity", in statements that take relevance amid demonstrations against his next movie 'Pathaan'.
"Social media has moulded the communal narrative of our times. Contrary to popular assumption, I feel that social media has a greater impact on film now than ever before." He stated this at the start of the 28th Kolkata International Film Festival (KIFF).
"Social media is frequently driven by a narrowness of perspective that confines human nature to its baser self. I heard somewhere that negativity enhances social media use and, as a result, it’s commercial worth. Such endeavors encircle the common narrative, causing it to be divisive and harmful” Mr. Khan stated.
"We haven't been able to meet in a while, but life is returning to normal. We're all happy, but I'm the happiest. And I have no reservations in stating that, regardless of what the world does, me, you, and all positive individuals in the world are ALIVE" He said.
The words came amid criticisms against his forthcoming film, 'Pathaan,' by right-wing social media users supported by certain BJP politicians - the second such venomous campaign against a Muslim film actor this year, following Aamir Khan's 'Laal Singh Chaddha' earlier this year. Among those who have condemned the film is BJP Madhya Pradesh Home Minister Narottam Mishra, who stated one of the film's songs demonstrated a "corrupt mindset" and vowed to prevent its release in the state.
