Aamir Khan made his big-screen return after nearly three years with Sitaare Zameen Par, which released in theatres on June 20. While the film opened stronger than expected, it hasn’t turned into the grand comeback fans were hoping for.

The film’s arrival also hit the collections of Housefull 5, which was doing well before Sitaare Zameen Par released. Aamir's comeback clearly shifted some of the audience’s attention.

Directed by RS Prasanna, the movie is seen as a spiritual follow-up to Aamir’s much-loved 2007 film Taare Zameen Par. Expectations were sky-high, but the box office figures didn’t reflect a major leap. In fact, the opening stayed close to the numbers of his past underperformers, showing little to no growth even after a long break from films.

Sitaare Zameen Par Box Office Collection Day 1: Decent Start, But No Real Jump

As per early estimates by Sacnilk, Sitaare Zameen Par earned Rs 11.50 crore on Day 1. The film had 21.43% occupancy across Hindi screens, with night shows performing the best at 32.50%. It was also released in Tamil and Telugu, but that didn’t bring a major boost to its numbers.

Advance bookings showed some promise, with over 1.15 lakh tickets sold across more than 9,500 shows nationwide. The film was expected to gross Rs 6.88 crore, including blocked seats. But thanks to walk-in audiences, the final figure touched Rs 11.50 crore. It is decent, but far from a box office breakout.

No Growth Over Laal Singh Chaddha, Housefull 5 Takes A Hit

Despite the better-than-expected start, Sitaare Zameen Par couldn’t cross the opening of Aamir’s last release, Laal Singh Chaddha, which made Rs 11.7 crore on Day 1 back in 2022. By comparison, Salman Khan’s Sikandar opened much stronger at Rs 26 crore

Meanwhile, Housefull 5 has clearly taken a hit. The film, which had been doing steady business, earned just Rs 2.06 crore on Day 15, a sharp 28% drop from the previous day. With weekend collections possibly rising, the weekday numbers will be crucial. If it continues to dip, Housefull 5 may soon exit theatres.

Word Of Mouth Is Key For Sitaare Zameen Par

Trade experts believe that the future of Sitaare Zameen Par now depends on word-of-mouth. With less competition ahead, the film has a shot at building momentum, but only if it connects with audiences soon.

Early reactions have called the movie a “well-intentioned film” and critics have praised Aamir Khan’s emotional performance. Inspired by the Spanish sports drama Campeones, the film is sticking to a theatrical-only release plan. So, an OTT release may not happen anytime soon.

Right now, Sitaare Zameen Par stands somewhere in between. It’s not a flop, but also not the solid comeback many expected. Its success now rests entirely on how the audience responds over the next few days.
