SS Rajamouli speaks about RRR not chosen as India's official entry for Oscars: 'It's disappointing'

Filmmaker SS Rajamouli has been working on Oscar campaign for his latest offering RRR, which released in theatres in March last year. The magnum opus, starring Ram Charan and Junior NTR, minted over Rs 1000 crore worldwide, emerging as one of highest grossers Indian films of all time. The film recently bagged two Critics Choice Awards and a Golden Globes, proving film’s recognition in the West. 

RRR ignored for Oscars

Despite numerous accolades and film's worldwide box office domination, RRR was not submitted as India's official entry to the Academy Awards. Pan Nalin's Gujarati film, The Chello Show, which was India's official entry to the Oscars, has also been selected by the Academy. However, many, including SS Rajamouli himself, believed RRR had higher chances of scoring an Oscar. The filmmaker has now opened about the same.

What SS Rajamouli said

When asked about his reaction to RRR not being selected for Oscars 2023, SS Rajamouli said in an interview to The Hollywood Reporter, “Yeah, it is disappointing. But we are not the kind of people who would sit and brood on why it didn’t happen. What has happened has happened, and we should go forward with it. But I am happy because it (Chhello Show/ The Last Film Show) is also an Indian film and it has also been shortlisted for Oscars. I’m quite happy for it. Of course, everyone knew RRR had a much bigger chance. Here (in the US) everyone felt RRR had a bigger chance. But I don't know how the committee (Film Federation of India), what are guidelines for the committee… I don't know that and I can't comment on that…"
