The Duffer Brothers’ hit series Stranger Things may have ended, but the debate around its finale is far from over. A new controversy has now erupted online, with fans accusing the creators of using AI tools like ChatGPT while working on the final script. The claims surfaced after the release of the documentary STRANGER THINGS – ONE LAST ADVENTURE, which premiered on January 12 and revisited the making of the show’s final season.

Stranger Things Fans Question The Creative Process Behind The Finale

The documentary was meant to offer fans a behind-the-scenes look at how the globally popular Netflix series came to an end. Instead, it has reopened old debates. As viewers revisited the much-criticised ending, many began analysing frames from the documentary closely. That is when some eagle-eyed fans claimed to spot multiple ChatGPT tabs open on a computer used by the makers.

Soon after, social media platforms were flooded with accusations and harsh reactions. One user wrote, “Stranger Things being ruined because they didn’t review the Chat GPT generated script is so fucking insane.”

Another posted, “Who thought is was a good idea to release that documentary???? they literally used chatgpt to write the script. i wish i was lying. #StrangerThings5 #DUFFERSCANTWRITE.”

A third user added, “What a lame way to end Stranger Things. Like all the hype + nO OnE wiLL PrEdIcT tHe EndINg. Thought duffer bros were right, no one thought you have zero vision and create the most basic ending.”

So far, the Duffer Brothers have not responded publicly to these claims. Netflix has also remained silent on whether AI tools were used during the writing process.

Why The Series Finale Divided Fans

The AI accusations come on top of existing criticism surrounding the Stranger Things Season 5 finale, titled The Rightside Up. Many viewers felt the ending was too safe and predictable for a show known for its emotional stakes and bold storytelling. Fans expected major losses or shocking twists, but instead felt they were given a neat and comfortable conclusion.

Several viewers also complained that the final battle with Vecna felt rushed and lacked impact. Others pointed out unresolved questions about the Upside Down, including its origins and timeline. Will Byers’ arc also drew criticism, with some fans accusing the show of queerbaiting without delivering a meaningful resolution. Eleven’s ending divided audiences as well, as many felt her fate was isolating and did not fully reflect her long journey toward finding a sense of belonging.

Adding to the frustration were reports that production on the final season began without a fully completed script. This detail has now been linked by fans to the alleged use of AI, further intensifying the backlash.
