Tamil Actor Chitra's Husband Arrested For Alleged Abetment To Suicide

Tamil TV star Chitra's husband has been arrested in Chennai, days after the actor's mother accused him of beating her daughter to death.

Police sources, however, had said that based on the post-mortem report, the actor had died by suicide and financial issues have emerged as a possible reason.

Chitra’s mother Vijaya, speaking to reporters, has alleged physical violence by her son-in-law Hemanth. An inconsolable Vijaya repeats, "She was beaten to death…,” adding, “She spoke to me on Tuesday saying she was on a show and that it would be late. Morning her father-in-law called sharing the news. How could it be?"

According to reports, relatives have claimed wounds on Chitra’s body, seeking for a full probe into her death. However police have not confirmed this on record.

Investigations into Chitra’s death is being done by the Regional Divisional Officer (RDO), as is the norm in cases relating to suspicious death of women who have been married for seven years or less. Chitra's funeral was held in Chennai on Thursday.

Chitra was well known for her character in the television series ‘Pandian Stores’. A few months ago, she got engaged to Hemanth, a businessman, and police claim that they had registered their marriage.

Recently, Chitra had been acting in a serial which is being shot in a studio in Nazarathpet. For ease of travel, she had been staying at a hotel nearby, and Hemanth was also with her. “After the shoot, she came to the hotel around 2.30 a.m. and went into the bathroom.

Hemanth claims he was waiting outside, and as she did not return for a long time and as there was no response to his knocking on the door, he informed the hotel staff and when they opened the door using a duplicate key, she was found dead,” said a senior police officer.

She was very active on social media and used to entertain fans with beautiful photos and positivity posts. She was also known for her positive comments even towards the trolls on her Instagram handle.

Condolences have been pouring in on social media ever since the news broke. Fans are in shock over the untimely death of the cheerful actress.
