The recent meeting between Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Thalapathy Vijay and DMK leader Udhayanidhi Stalin has once again grabbed massive attention online. What made the moment special for fans was not just the political significance, but the emotional reunion between two men who once shared a close friendship before misunderstandings drove them apart.

A handshake and warm hug exchanged at MK Stalin’s Chennai residence quickly went viral on social media. For many Tamil cinema fans, it was a nostalgic reminder of the old bond between Thalapathy Vijay and Udhayanidhi Stalin — a friendship that survived fame, politics, and a two-year silence.

Thalapathy Vijay And Udhayanidhi Stalin Were Childhood Friends

Long before entering politics, Thalapathy Vijay and Udhayanidhi Stalin were known to be close friends. Both studied at Loyola College in Chennai, though Vijay reportedly left his studies midway to focus on acting.

Over the years, Vijay became one of Tamil cinema’s biggest superstars, while Udhayanidhi largely stayed away from the spotlight before eventually stepping into films and politics.

Their friendship became stronger when Udhayanidhi launched Red Giant Movies in 2008. Interestingly, his first production venture was Vijay’s film Kuruvi. Reports at the time suggested that Vijay himself encouraged Udhayanidhi to begin producing Tamil films.

Despite high expectations and the reunion of the successful Ghilli team, Kuruvi failed to create the impact many expected. After the film, Vijay and Udhayanidhi surprisingly never collaborated again.

Why Thalapathy Vijay And Udhayanidhi Stopped Talking

In 2023, Udhayanidhi finally addressed the reason behind their fallout during an interview with a media portal.

He said, “Vijay doesn’t become friends so easily. When he becomes friends with someone, he becomes very close to them. In that way, Vijay and I became close friends. But after the release of the film Kuruvi, some people tried to break us apart, this led to misunderstanding. Because of this, we didn’t talk for two years due to some misunderstandings. After meeting him in person and telling him what happened, we became friends again. However, we continued to maintain a safe distance from each other.”

His statement shocked many fans at the time, especially because the duo had rarely spoken publicly about their personal bond.

Udhayanidhi’s Viral Comment On Thalapathy Vijay

An old social media interaction involving Udhayanidhi and Thalapathy Vijay also resurfaced after their recent reunion.

Ahead of his acting debut in Oru Kal Oru Kannadi in 2012, Udhayanidhi participated in a Q&A session on X. When a fan asked whether he had entered the film industry to compete with Vijay, he replied, “I am not insane to compete with Thalapathy.”

The remark quickly went viral again after Vijay’s swearing-in as Tamil Nadu Chief Minister.

Politics Has Changed Their Equation

Today, Thalapathy Vijay and Udhayanidhi Stalin stand on opposite sides of Tamil Nadu politics. Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) swept the 2026 Assembly elections and defeated the DMK government led by MK Stalin.

While Vijay now serves as the Chief Minister, Udhayanidhi Stalin has taken charge as the Leader of the Opposition. Their political rivalry has already sparked intense debates inside the Assembly. Vijay recently criticised the previous DMK government over the state’s financial condition, while Udhayanidhi responded sharply by reminding TVK leaders that the DMK remained “politically senior.”
