Rashmika Mandanna starrer The Girlfriend has hit theatres, but the start hasn’t been what the actress or her fans expected. Despite her growing popularity and a busy year with multiple releases, her latest outing has opened to a lukewarm response at the box office.
The Girlfriend Box Office Collection Day 1
According to Sacnilk, The Girlfriend managed to earn around Rs 1.30 crore on its opening day. This marks Rashmika’s lowest debut of 2025, following her earlier releases Chhaava, Sikandar, Kuberaa and Thamma. Among these, only Chhaava could be labelled a hit, while the others struggled to find traction.
The film recorded an overall 16.90% occupancy across Telugu regions on Friday. Morning shows saw around 12.83% attendance, while evening shows improved slightly to 15.80%, peaking at 23.55% during the night slots. Despite its poor debut, the film did slightly better than Sonakshi Sinha’s Jatadhara, which also released on the same day.

Jatadhara Box Office Collection Day 1
Sonakshi Sinha and Sudheer Babu starrer Jatadhara faced a similar fate at the box office. According to Sacnilk’s report, the film collected just Rs 0.90 crore on Day 1. It saw an overall 17.24% occupancy in Telugu-speaking regions, but the Hindi version failed to make much impact.

Both films had limited marketing and were released without a festive or holiday advantage. Yet, The Girlfriend managed to stay ahead by a small margin. Trade experts believe the film could still pick up over the weekend if positive word-of-mouth spreads.
About The Girlfriend And Jatadhara: Plot, Cast, Budget
The Girlfriend tells the story of a young woman navigating love, compatibility and self-discovery during her college years. It explores how relationships shape her growth and choices. Rashmika Mandanna leads the cast alongside Anu Emmanuel, Rohini, Dheekshith Shetty, Koushik Mahata, and Rao Ramesh. Directed with a focus on emotional depth and youthful themes, the film reportedly has a modest budget of Rs 16 crore.
On the other hand, Jatadhara dives into a mythological fantasy setup. Its story revolves around ancient rituals where nobles buried treasures underground, guarded by powerful entities known as “Dhanapisachis.” The film stars Sudheer Babu, Sonakshi Sinha, Shilpa Shirodkar, Srinivas Avasarala and Pradeep Rawat in key roles. It’s also said to have been made on a Rs 16 crore budget.
While The Girlfriend hasn’t opened strong, it still has a chance to improve over the weekend. With no major releases in competition, the film’s performance will depend heavily on audience reviews and Rashmika’s fan following.
For now, the actress’s fifth release of the year stands as her lowest opener, but with decent word-of-mouth, it could still manage a respectable run in the coming days.
