The Kashmir Files: IFFI jury head calls it ‘propoganda, vulgar movie’. Truth can make people lie, says Vivek Agnihotri

The Kashmir Files: Israeli filmmaker Nadav Lapid, who is also jury head of the International Film Festival of India (IFFI), slammed Vivek Agnihotri’s The Kashmir Files. He called it a “propoganda, vulgar movie”. He said that the jury was “disturbed and shocked” to see the film being screened at the festival. The Kashmir Files was selected for the Indian Panorama Section and was screened at 22 November. Anupam Kher, who also stars in the movie, attended the special screening.

Vivek Agnihotri on Tuesday morning wrote a cryptic message on Twitter. “Truth can make people lie,” he tweeted.

Disturbed and shocked

Speaking at the 53rd International Film Festival of India in Goa on Monday night, Lapid said, “All of us were disturbed and shocked by the movie The Kashmir Files. It felt to us like a propaganda, vulgar movie that’s inappropriate for an artistic, competitive section of such a prestigious film festival. I feel comfortable to share open disfeelings with you since the spirit of the festival can truly accept critical discussion”.

On Tuesday morning, Vivek Agnihotri posted a cryptic tweet without mentioning the film or Lapid’s criticism. Vivek tweeted about how ‘truth can make people lie’. Though the message was cryptic and did not mention anybody, many on social media took this as a direct dig at the controversy.

Truth is most dangerous

He tweeted on Tuesday morning, “GM (good morning). Truth is the most dangerous thing. It can make people lie. #CreativeConsciousness”

Read the tweet:

Actor Anupam Kher, who played the lead in The Kashmir Files, referred to Lapid and said, “It seems pre-planned as immediately after that the toolkit gang became active. It’s shameful for him to make a statement like this. Jews have suffered Holocaust and he comes from that community. For him to make such a statement, he has also pained those people who have been victims of this tragedy many years ago. May God give him wisdom so that he does not further his agenda on stage using the sufferings of thousands.”

The Kashmir Files was released on 11 March earlier this year. The film depicts the exodus and killings of the Kashmiri Pandits in the valley in 1990. Although it was well-received in India, several criticized the film and criticised Agnihotri for its propagandist tone.

Besides Anupam Kher, the film also featured Mithun Chakraborty and Pallavi Joshi in pivotal roles.
