The Kerala Story: Alert in Tamil Nadu as intelligence agencies warn of protests over film’s release

The Kerala Story: As the makers of The Keral Story get ready to release the film this week across the country, intelligence agencies have issued an alert in Tamil Nadu. They warned that The Kerala Story’s release could lead to widespread protests in the state.

The Kerala Story, set to hit theatres on May 5, narrates the story of thousands of young women who were brainwashed into joining the Islamic State (IS) and headed off to countries like Syria and Afghanistan.

The film has touched off a political firestorm. Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan slammed the makers of the film for promoting the agenda of the Sangh Parivar. He said the film has tried to project Kerala as a centre of religious extremism.

Shashi Tharoor slams film

Congress MP from Kerala’s capital Thiruvananthapuram Shashi Tharoor stated that the film is a misrepresentation of the state. He accused the filmmakers of indulging in “gross exaggeration” and “distortion” of the state’s reality.

However, the BJP has come out in support of the movie. BJP state president K Surendran termed as “double standards” the stand of the Kerala CM and ruling CPI(M), and slammed their “selective freedom of expression approach”.

Film stars Adah Sharma

Directed by Sudipto Sen and produced by Vipul Amrutlal Shah, The Kerala Story stars Adah Sharma, Yogita Bihani, Siddhi Idnani, and Sonia Balani in the lead roles.

The trailer of The Kerala Story came under fire as it claimed that 32,000 girls from the state went missing and later joined the Islamic State.

The CPI(M) and the Congress say the film falsely claims that the women converted, got radicalised and were deployed in terror missions in India and the world.

The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) has granted an ‘A’ certificate to The Kerala Story. It also deleted 10 scenes from the film. The Supreme Court meanwhile, rejected a plea to stay the film release.
