Veteran Bollywood actor Govinda has publicly expressed his displeasure with filmmaker Karan Johar over the film Govinda Naam Mera. The actor said he was unhappy that a movie was made using his name and felt it lacked sensitivity. Govinda shared his views while speaking to news agency ANI, and his remarks have since gone viral on social media.
The actor said he felt uncomfortable seeing a film titled after his name, especially when its storyline touched on themes he did not agree with. Reacting to the situation, Govinda said, “Kisi ne mere naam se picture bana di.. shaayad Govinda Mera Naam… I don’t know… mujhe lagta hai Karan Johar ki thi (Someone made a film on my name, Govinda Naam Mera. I think it was made by Karan Johar).”
Govinda Naam Mera was released in 2022 and was produced by Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions. The film premiered directly on Disney+ Hotstar and featured Vicky Kaushal, Kiara Advani and Bhumi Pednekar in lead roles.
Govinda On Govinda Naam Mera And Why He Is UPSET
Directed by Shashank Khaitan, the film revolves around a love triangle. Vicky Kaushal plays Govinda Waghmare, a struggling choreographer caught between his wife Gauri (played by Bhumi Pednekar) and his girlfriend Suku (played by Kiara Advani). The story mixes humour with relationship conflicts and suspense.
However, Govinda was not impressed by the concept. He pointed out that the film focuses on misunderstandings between a husband, wife and girlfriend. According to him, such themes should be handled carefully. While he acknowledged that humour has its place in cinema, he stressed that respect should not be compromised.
The actor also urged filmmakers not to drag his personal life into their creative choices. Making an emotional appeal, Govinda said, “I promise, no misbehave, please. I request. With folded hands. Mazak har jagah par har tarah se acha nahi lagta hai (I am not in the position to take this lightly).”

The video of Govinda’s comments was shared by ANI on Instagram and quickly sparked debate online. Social media users had mixed reactions. One user supported the actor and commented, “Bahut badhiya jawab diya aapne.” Another questioned, “Govinda naam isne trademark kar liya hai kya ?”
A third user said, “He was sleeping from 4 yrs after release.” One more joked, “Tujko mirchi lagi tho may kya karu.”
As of now, Karan Johar has not responded to Govinda’s statements or issued any clarification.
Actor’s Personal Life
Away from the controversy, Govinda’s personal life has also been under the spotlight. He married Sunita in 1987, and the couple has two children, Tina Ahuja and Yashvardan Ahuja. In 2024, the actor was hospitalised after suffering a bullet injury in his leg caused by his revolver.
Later, rumours about Govinda and Sunita heading for divorce made headlines. However, the couple strongly denied the claims. Sunita stated clearly that no one could separate them, putting an end to the speculation.
