Varanasi Movie Cast: Nearly three years after the global hit RRR, SS Rajamouli is back with a new project. He is teaming up with Mahesh Babu, Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Prithviraj Sukumaran for Varanasi. The film is already being called one of the most anticipated Indian releases in recent years.
At a grand Hyderabad event on November 15, Rajamouli revealed the film’s title and cast. A teaser was also unveiled and thrilled fans. This “Globe Trotter” event saw over 50,000 attendees cheering “Jai Babu, Jai Babu” as the teaser played. Priyanka Chopra joined Mahesh Babu and Rajamouli on stage. She asked fans what they call the superstar. When the crowd chanted “Babu, Babu,” she joined in.
The teaser shows the film’s scale and grandeur. It opens with ancient landscapes ruled by nature. There are glimpses of Hindu deities like Maa Kali and Hanuman. The highlight is Mahesh Babu as Rudhra, riding a bull and wielding a trishul. Rajamouli also shared a new poster on X, confirming Mahesh Babu as the lead.
Speaking at the event, Rajamouli said, “Since my childhood, I’ve spoken many times about what the Ramayana and Mahabharata mean to me, and how making them is my dream project. I never imagined I would get to shoot an important episode from the Ramayana this early. While writing every scene and every dialogue, I felt like I was floating. On the first day, when Mahesh came in Lord Rama’s get-up for the photoshoot, I got goosebumps. I was torn. Mahesh has the charm of Krishna, but the calmness of Rama. Still, I was confident. I even set that photo as my wallpaper… and then removed it.”
He added, “We shot this sequence for 60 days, and we completed it recently. Every single day was a challenge. Every episode and sub-episode felt like a film by itself, everything had to be reimagined and freshly planned. Crossing all those hurdles, we finally wrapped the sequence. I believe it will be one of the most memorable portions of the film.”

SS Rajamouli Directorial Is The 2nd Indian Film To Be Shot Entirely For IMAX After Ramayana
Varanasi is also only the second Indian film to be shot entirely for IMAX. The first was Nitish Tiwari’s Ramayana, starring Ranbir Kapoor, Sai Pallavi and Yash, set for Diwali 2026. IMAX filming demands high precision in lighting, VFX, and composition. Every frame counts and even small mistakes are magnified on the large screens.
For Rajamouli, Varanasi is both an artistic and technical challenge. Even at this early stage, the teaser has created a buzz worldwide. Fans are eager to see the film’s mythological story brought to life. Varanasi is scheduled for a summer 2027 release, likely on March 17. Right now, only lead actors have been revealed.
