Acidity Relief Yoga: Acidity, heartburn and acid reflux have quietly become a part of daily life for many. Most people accept it as a NORMAL aftermath of heavy meals, stress or irregular routines. But persistent digestive discomfort shouldn’t be ignored. While medicines provide temporary relief, certain yoga practices can address the root cause by calming the nervous system and improving digestion naturally.
Delhi-based Unalome Yoga & Wellness Studio and co-founder of SOL Wellness Riya Vyas has shared a simple breathing technique. This acidity relief yoga can help manage daily acidity, heartburn and acid reflux. In a recent Instagram video, she explains the benefits of the practice and provides a step-by-step guide to perform it effectively.
Pranayama As Acidity Relief Yoga
For those struggling with digestive issues, incorporating a daily pranayama practice can be highly beneficial. Riya recommends Chandra Bhedi Pranayama, a left-nostril breathing technique believed to cool the digestive system. It activates the Ida Nadi, the body’s energy channel associated with calming and restorative functions. Practising it in the Vajrasana position supports digestion further while promoting a sense of calm.
How to practice Chandra Bhedi Pranayama:
- Sit comfortably, ideally in Vajrasana, with hips supported on a soft cushion and spine upright.
- Close your right nostril with your thumb and inhale slowly through your left nostril.
- Switch sides by closing the left nostril and exhaling through the right.
- Repeat this pattern for 5–10 rounds, gradually increasing to 2–3 minutes if possible.
This mindful breathing helps neutralise excess acidity naturally while calming the nervous system.
Benefits of Vajrasana And Chandra Bhedi Pranayama
Vajrasana (Thunderbolt Pose):
- Can be practised safely after meals.
- Improves digestion and blood circulation to the abdominal area.
- Reduces bloating and acid build-up in the stomach.
Chandra Bhedi Pranayama (Left Nostril Breathing):
- Activates the body’s cooling and calming energy.
- Soothes the nervous system and reduces internal heat, a common trigger for acidity.
- Balances ‘pitta’ in Ayurvedic terms, addressing hyperacidity naturally.
Riya emphasises that the combination of Vajrasana and Chandra Bhedi Pranayama is simple but highly effective. She also stresses the importance of daily habits, such as meal timings, portion control and food choices, to maintain long-term digestive health.
Instead of simply managing symptoms, practising this acidity relief yoga teaches the body to digest peacefully and reduces chronic discomfort. With consistency, acidity, heartburn and acid reflux can become manageable rather than NORMAL.
