We all reach for paracetamol when a fever or body ache strikes. It’s simple, effective and easily available. Almost every home has a strip or two. But have you ever wondered if this common painkiller could actually harm your liver? An AIIMS doctor recently shared an important warning that has many people rethinking their daily pill habits.
Dr Priyanka Sehrawat from AIIMS shared a video explaining how paracetamol, though considered safe, can turn risky when overused. She said, “Agar aap paracetamol jaisi goli kha rahe hain to aap apne liver ko risk par daal rahe hain.” In simple terms, she means that regular or excessive intake can damage your liver over time.
Paracetamol is an over-the-counter medicine that helps reduce fever and pain. It works fast and is one of the most commonly used drugs worldwide. But according to Dr Sehrawat, its frequent or careless use can silently harm your liver, the organ responsible for filtering toxins from your body.
When ‘Safe Dose’ Of Paracetamol Turns Harmful For Your Liver
She explained that the medicine is generally safe when taken in the right dose. She said, “Normal dose mein agar aap 500 mg ki tablet din mein 2-3 baar lete hain to usually safe hoti hai.” However, the real danger begins when you start taking it daily or for weeks without medical advice. Shye added, “Lekin agar aap ise roz roz, do-teen hafton ya mahine tak lete rahe, to yeh liver ke liye toxic ho sakti hai.”
Dr Sehrawat also warned that many people think of paracetamol as a harmless, go-to solution for any discomfort. But she emphasised that even medicines available without prescription can have serious long-term effects. The liver can only process a limited amount of the drug. When that limit is crossed, it starts to produce toxic substances that may lead to liver inflammation or, in severe cases, liver failure.
What Should You Do?
She advised not to self-medicate for too long. “Always good to consult your doctor before consuming paracetamol regularly.”
So next time you reach for that small white pill, pause for a second. Paracetamol might ease your pain, but using it too often can put your liver at risk. A doctor’s guidance can help you use it safely and protect your health in the long run.
