Covid surge: India records 53,480 new cases

India has logged in 53,480 new coronavirus cases in the last 24-hour, taking the total tally to 12,149,335 on Wednesday, the latest update from Union Ministry said. In the last 24-hour, 354 people died, pushing the total tally to 1,62,468. The number of patients who have been discharged from hospitals in the last 24 hours is reported to be 41,280.

Centre on Tuesday expressed concern over growing covid-19 cases in the country, while warning that the country is at risk and any complacency at this stage will have heavy costs.

“COVID-19 situation is turning from bad to worse. In the last few weeks, especially in some states, it is a huge cause for worry. No state, no part of the country should be complacent,” NITI Aayog member (Health) V K Paul said at a media briefing.

“Hospitals and ICUs have to be readied. If cases increase rapidly, the healthcare system would be overwhelmed,” Paul warned.

The active cases in the country have been increasing for more than 20 days and now comprise 4.47 per cent of the total infections, while the recovery rate has further dropped to 94.19 per cent, the health ministry has said.

According to the ICMR, 24,36,72,940 samples have been tested up to March 30 with 10,22,915 samples being tested on Tuesday.

On Monday, only 7,85,864 samples were tested, while on Sunday, 9.13 lakh samples were tested, compared to over 10 lakh samples the previous days, according to the data by the apex research body.

Meanwhile,  the overall number of global Covid-19 cases has surpassed 128.1 million, while the deaths have surged to more than 2.80 million, according to the Johns Hopkins University.
