Diabetes: For individuals diagnosed with diabetes, high blood sugar levels are often seen as the biggest enemy. This often prompts people to seek “healthier” alternatives to white sugar in the form of jaggery, palm sugar and brown sugar. However, you need to find out the real truth behind these sugar alternatives to make an informed decision for your health.
One of the biggest lies when it comes to sugar alternatives is that diabetics are told that sugar alternatives don’t behave like sugar in the body. This is completely wrong!
Diabetes: The Illusion Of “Natural” Sweeteners
Most people believe that anything labelled as “natural” is automatically healthier. While jaggery, palm sugar, and brown sugar may undergo less processing than white sugar, they are still concentrated sources of carbohydrates, primarily sucrose, glucose and fructose.
DON'T MISS
From a metabolic perspective, your body does not significantly differentiate between these sugars. Once consumed, they are rapidly broken down into glucose, entering the bloodstream and causing a spike in blood sugar levels. For someone with diabetes, this spike can be both immediate and dangerous.
#1. Jaggery: A Traditional Sweetener with Modern Risks
Packed with trace minerals such as iron and potassium, jaggery is often promoted as a healthy alternative. In reality, jaggery is almost entirely composed of sucrose. Its glycaemic index is high, meaning it can raise blood sugar levels quickly, resulting in fatigue, nerve damage and long-term vascular issues.
#2. Palm Sugar: A Misunderstood “Low GI” Option
Rich in carbohydrates and calories, palm sugar has an inconsistent nutritional profile, which makes it an unreliable option for those who need strict glucose control.
#3. Brown Sugar: Not Much Better Than White Sugar
The glycaemic index of brown sugar is quite similar to that of white sugar. Moreover, it has almost the same content of carbs and calories. From a diabetes management standpoint, substituting white sugar with brown sugar offers no meaningful benefit.
The danger lies in perception. Many people believe they are making a healthier choice and therefore feel justified in consuming more. This false sense of security can lead to chronic overconsumption and poorly controlled blood glucose levels.
The idea that jaggery, palm sugar, or brown sugars are safe alternatives for people with diabetes is a dangerous misconception. While they may differ slightly in processing or nutrient content, their impact on blood sugar is significant and often underestimated.
