However, it is important to understand what science actually says before making any changes in a diabetes diet.

There is no official clinical guideline from any major diabetes association that says chikoo or dates can stop sugar cravings instantly. Still, nutrition experts do agree that some fruits can be better alternatives to refined sugar snacks when eaten in controlled portions. So, it becomes important to look at what research and doctors actually say about these foods in diabetes management.

Diabetes: What Dates Really Do For Sugar Cravings

Dates are often considered a healthier sweet option for people with diabetes, but only when eaten in moderation. Studies show that dates have a low to moderate glycemic index, which means they do not always cause sudden spikes in blood sugar when eaten in small amounts. They also contain fiber, potassium and antioxidants, which help slow down the absorption of sugar in the body.

A 2023 clinical review found that moderate date consumption does not significantly worsen blood sugar control in people with type 2 diabetes. In some cases, it may even support better cholesterol levels. Because of this, health experts usually suggest that one or two dates can be used as a controlled sweet substitute, especially when paired with nuts or protein to reduce sugar spikes. However, eating too many dates is not recommended for people managing diabetes, as it can still increase overall sugar intake.

Chikoo And Its Effect On Sweet Cravings

Chikoo, also known as sapota, is another naturally sweet fruit, but it has been studied less in relation to diabetes. Nutrition experts describe it as a fruit that is high in natural sugar, with moderate fiber and a good amount of calories and carbohydrates.

There is no strong clinical evidence that chikoo directly reduces sugar cravings in diabetes. Still, dietitians believe that naturally sweet fruits like chikoo may help some people shift away from processed sweets by satisfying sweet taste in a more natural form. At the same time, it is important to be careful, because chikoo can still raise blood sugar levels if eaten in large quantities, especially for people with diabetes.

Doctors generally recommend that people with diabetes focus on whole fruits instead of sugary snacks. Fruits like apples, guava, berries and even dates in moderation are often preferred. Pairing fruits with protein or healthy fats such as nuts or yoghurt can also help slow sugar absorption and improve balance.

Research also shows that sugar cravings in diabetes are not only about sweet foods. They are often linked to poor diet balance, stress, and fluctuations in blood sugar levels. This means long-term diabetes control depends more on overall eating habits rather than simply replacing sugar with fruit.
