Are you addicted to sugar or honey? You might think a teaspoon here and there is harmless. But could these sweet treats be quietly harming your liver? Fatty liver is becoming increasingly common, and experts say that understanding how sugar and honey affect your liver is key to staying healthy.

Fatty Liver: How Sugar Impacts Your Health

Nutritionist Mitushi Ajmera, who has over 161k followers on Instagram, recently shared a video that is catching everyone’s attention. In it, she says, “People say sugar damages the liver and works like a factory for fat. The truth is, whether it’s sugar or honey, the liver still has to process it in portions. Remember, damage happens only when intake goes much higher than normal – above 50 grams of pure sugar daily. That means you would need to eat around 100 to 150 grams every day to reach that level.”

She points out that both sugar and honey contain about 50% glucose. “One teaspoon of sugar has only about 4 grams, the same with honey. So, which one should you stop? The real problem starts when there is excess. For example, when we prepare a ‘healthy’ dish, we often think it’s fine because it uses good ingredients. But if it has too much sugar, it won’t just add sweetness, but also increase calories.”

What You Must Do To Protect Your Liver

Mitushi stresses that the solution is simple. “Learn to control your intake. Understand your calorie budget and your activity level. Treats, whether made with sugar or honey, are fine if eaten at the right time. Just don’t consume them with every meal. Only then will your liver and brain stay healthy.”

Her advice highlights a simple but often overlooked point: moderation is the key. Many people overconsume sugar without realising it, thinking small amounts won’t affect their health. Over time, this can contribute to fat buildup in the liver, leading to fatty liver disease.

Well, you don’t need to completely eliminate sugar or honey from your diet. Instead, focus on portion control and timing. Enjoy your sweet treats responsibly, balance your meals with activity and give your liver a chance to function normally.
