Headache Warning Signs: AIIMS Doctor Reveals 5 Red Flags That Need Immediate Medical Attention, Check

AIIMS doctor reveals 5 serious headache warning signs you should never ignore. Learn when to consult a neurologist to prevent serious health risks.

Headaches are common, but sometimes they can signal something serious. Most people ignore mild or occasional headaches, thinking they will pass on their own. However, neurologists warn that certain symptoms can be a red flag for serious conditions. Ignoring them could be dangerous.

In a recent video, Dr. Priyanka Sehrawat (a neurologist at AIIMS) explained five headache warning signs that require urgent medical attention. She stressed that these signs should not be overlooked or treated at home.

5 Headache Signs That Need Urgent Medical Attention

1. Change in Headache Character

If your headaches suddenly feel different, it’s a warning. For example, mild headaches that were occasional may now affect your entire head or feel like a tight band. Severe headaches accompanied by intense vomiting are also red flags. Dr. Sehrawat says, “Increased frequency, intensity, or new symptoms means a neurologist should be consulted immediately.”

2. Vision Problems or Ringing in Ears

Headaches with blurred vision, double vision, trouble seeing sideways, or ringing in the ears could indicate increased pressure in the brain. Any new vision or hearing problem along with a headache requires prompt medical attention.

3. Headache with Fever and Neck Stiffness

A persistent headache with fever and a stiff neck, especially if you are vomiting, may signal a brain infection or swelling. Dr. Sehrawat points out that conditions like meningitis can be life-threatening if not treated quickly.

4. New Headache After Age 50

If you are over 50 and experience a headache you’ve never had before, take it seriously. New headaches at this age can indicate underlying health problems, such as temporal arteritis, and should be evaluated by a neurologist.

5. Weakness, Numbness, or Balance Issues

Weakness or numbness in the arms or legs, tingling sensations, or difficulty walking along with a headache may suggest a problem in the brain. These neurological symptoms can signal strokes or tumours, so urgent medical consultation is essential.

Her Key Message

Dr. Sehrawat emphasises that anyone experiencing one or more of these five warning signs should not ignore them at home. Prompt consultation with a neurologist can prevent complications and ensure timely treatment. Sharing this information is crucial so people recognise dangerous headache symptoms early.

Remember, while most headaches are harmless, some can indicate serious conditions. Paying attention to your body and seeking medical help when needed can make all the difference.
