Health Tips: Ways to Cure Your Sweet Tooth

A strong sweet tooth can be a curse. You constantly crave sweets, and even when you’re trying to cut back, it’s impossible to resist a cookie, a piece of cake or an ice cream cone. The joy you get from sweet food is simply too great.

Brush frequently

Brushing your teeth after eating a sweet treat may help keep your mouth clean and your teeth healthy. Make sure you brush at least twice per day and, if possible, about 30 minutes after eating sugary foods.

Drink water

Not only will staying hydrated keep your cravings at bay, but drinking water after having a sweet treat helps wash away sugar from your mouth to avoid feeding bacteria. If you can’t brush directly after eating, drinking water helps stimulate saliva production and keeps sugar from sticking to your teeth.

Fill up with Greek Yogurt and Cinnamon

Greek yogurt is packed with calcium and live bacterial cultures. Steer clear of flavored yogurts with unnecessary sugar and add your own zero-calorie topping, cinnamon, instead. Use a tea cup for your yogurt to make sure that you don’t overdo the portion size.

Eat more whole foods

The less processed food in your diet, the less added sugar you’ll get. Aim to get plenty of green vegetables, leans meats, and healthy fats in your diet to combat sugar cravings and satisfy your hunger.

Don’t skip meals

Eating regularly will prevent your blood sugar from dropping too low, which can make you crave sugar. Plan your meals out ahead of time, to avoid accidentally missing one and to ensure you have healthy, wholesome meals ready to go.

Wait it out

Sugar cravings are temporary, not permanent. If you wait 10 minutes, your craving will pass. To have the will power to wait out a craving will improve yourself mentally and physically in the long run.

Get more sleep

“Getting adequate amounts of sleep optimises energy levels, reduces appetite and slashes sugar cravings. When you are tired, ghrelin, the hormone that stimulates appetite (often referred to as the ‘hunger hormone’) increases, and leptin, the hormone that suppresses the appetite decreases, which can lead to you feeling the need for something sugary to give you a quick energy fix. Ensure that you are getting around the recommended eight hours of sleep a night and that the quality of your sleep is good too.”
