The Directorate General of Health, Uttarakhand, has issued comprehensive guidelines to prevent respiratory diseases, including the Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV). Although no HMPV cases have been reported in the state so far, health authorities have advised strict adherence to preventive measures as the virus shows symptoms similar to seasonal flu, including cold, fever, and respiratory discomfort.
Key Guidelines for Hospitals and Public
Hospital Preparedness:
Hospitals across Uttarakhand have been instructed to ensure the availability of isolation beds, oxygen support, ventilators, and essential medical supplies like PPE kits, N-95 masks, and VTM vials. Adequate staffing of doctors and nurses has also been mandated.
Monitoring and Surveillance:
Medical facilities and community health centers will intensify surveillance for Influenza-Like Illness (ILI) and Severe Acute Respiratory Illness (SARI). All cases will be recorded in the Integrated Health Information Platform (IHIP). Rapid Response Teams will monitor unusual cases and take swift action where clustering is detected.
Public Awareness:
Authorities aim to promote awareness through various channels. The public is advised to maintain hand hygiene, stay hydrated, and seek medical advice for symptoms like cold or fever. Vulnerable groups, such as children and the elderly, are urged to exercise extra caution.
Dos and Don’ts
Dos:
Cover nose and mouth while sneezing or coughing.
Avoid crowded places.
Practice good hand hygiene and maintain distance from symptomatic individuals.
Don’ts:
Avoid reusing tissues.
Do not self-medicate without medical advice.
Refrain from touching your face frequently.
The health department remains vigilant, encouraging public cooperation to mitigate the spread of respiratory diseases during the winter season.
