India reports over 4 lakh cases, 4,009 deaths in last 24-hour

India has logged in over 4 lakh new Covid-19 cases in the last 24 hours, taking the country’s total caseload to over 2.18 crore. Out of these, over 37 lakh cases are currently active while over 1.79 crore people have recovered from the disease. In the same time, 4,187 more people succumbed to the virus, taking the overall fatality tally over 2.38 lakh.

Maharashtra reported about 54,000 cases, Karnataka had nearly 49,000, while Kerala had over 38,000. 

Many states in the last few days have announced lockdowns and curfews to curb the spread of the virus. While Tamil Nadu on Saturday announced to impose curfew, Karnataka and Goa announced lockdown on Friday.

The country may not witness the third wave of the virus if strong measures are taken, the government said on Friday. The statement came two days after the Chief Scientific advisor said the third wave is inevitable.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Friday said that his government in the national capital can inoculate people within 3 months if 80-85 lakh doses of vaccine are given to Delhi every month. “To complete vaccination within 3 months, we need to vaccinate 3 lakh people every day. Currently, we are inoculating 1 lakh people in a day, he said. Meanwhile, as per the latest reports, the CM has complained of vaccine shortage.

Maharashtra Health Minister Rajesh Tope on Friday warned that children may be hit hard if a third wave happens. Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray on Wednesday said that the state is already preparing itself for the third wave of the virus.

Meanwhile, the overall global Covid-19 caseload has topped 156.4 million, while the deaths have surged to more than 3.26 million, according to the Johns Hopkins University.
