Infertility in Men: From Chats and Work to Childlessness, Is Technology Quietly Killing Your Sperm?

Infertility in Men: Are your daily-use gadgets really hurting your chances of naturally becoming a father? Read on.

Infertility in Men: In India alone, approximately 27.5 million couples are struggling against infertility. While many blame stress, sedentary lifestyles and poor diet as some of the top factors behind male infertility, many health experts have revealed that a silent killer can be “radiation” that is caused by laptops or mobile phones.

Gadgets and technologies such as laptops, mobile phones and wireless internet technologies such as 5G routers/modems and Wi-Fi emit a significant amount of electromagnetic radiation (EMR). This can considerably interact with the male reproductive systems, either by non-thermal or thermal mechanisms.

Laptops and mobile phones have been scientifically and medically proven to be two of the most hypothesized sources of electromagnetic radiation and heat that can significantly impact male fertility.

How Do Laptops And Mobiles Increase The Risk Of Infertility In Men?

  • Spermatogenesis (the process of sperm production from the primordial germ cells) gets impaired significantly because of chronic scrotal heat from keeping laptops on the lap. It can even negatively impact the production of sperm in men.
  • Radiofrequency electromagnetic fields (RF-EMF) from laptops and mobile devices can considerably induce oxidative stress in sperm and testicular tissue. RF-EMF is also associated with sperm motility, count and normal morphology.
  • Sperm DNA may get negatively impacted due to oxidative stress. This, in turn, can reduce chances of natural conception and increase fragmentation.
  • Combined heat and RF-EMF from gadgets near the groin area can severely damage cells in the testes that produce sperm.
  • Prolonged laptop use on the lap can lead to elevated scrotal temperature. This can cause transient hyperthermia that can severely impact fertility over time.
  • Reproductive function in men can be significantly impacted by EMR-related hormonal alterations, including lower testosterone.

Keep sure to keep your devices at a distance away from yourself.
