In a recent video, she emphasised that fatty liver isn’t solely caused by alcohol consumption; poor dietary habits and lifestyle choices play a significant role.

She pointed out that our bodies convert excess fats from processed foods into triglycerides, leading to fat accumulation in the liver—a condition known as non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD).

Understanding Fatty Liver Disease

NAFLD is a condition where fat builds up in the liver without significant alcohol consumption. It’s increasingly common in India, with a study revealing that approximately 38% of Indians are affected by this silent liver condition

This disease often progresses without noticeable symptoms, making early detection challenging. If left unmanaged, it can lead to more severe liver conditions, including cirrhosis and liver cancer.

Is It Possible To Reverse Fatty Liver Completely?

Dr Sehrawat emphasises that while reversing fatty liver is extremely difficult, it’s not impossible. The key lies in early intervention and lifestyle modifications. She advises focusing on a balanced diet, regular physical activity, and avoiding processed foods high in unhealthy fats. Incorporating antioxidant-rich beverages like green tea, coffee, and beetroot juice can also support liver health

Preventing fatty liver is more effective than attempting to reverse it. Dr Anoop Saraya from AIIMS suggests adopting a healthy lifestyle, including weight management, regular exercise and a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. He also highlights the importance of avoiding excessive intake of junk and sugary foods.

While reversing is challenging, early detection and lifestyle changes can significantly improve liver health. By understanding the causes and taking proactive steps, you can protect your liver and overall well-being. Remember, prevention is always better than cure.
