Moderna starts covid-19 vaccine trials for kids

Taking a step ahead in line with the development of treatment against covid-19, US-based Biotechnology company Moderna on Tuesday announced that it is now ready to conduct vaccine trials among children. The pharma giant in a statement said that it has stated covid-19 vaccine trials for children aged from 6 months to under 12-year-old with plans to enroll about 6,750 participants.

“We are pleased to begin this Phase 2/3 study of mRNA-1273 in healthy children in the US and Canada,” said CEO Stephane Bancel.

“This pediatric study will help us assess the potential safety and immunogenicity of our Covid-19 vaccine candidate in this important younger age population.”

In comparison to adults, fewer children have been infected wit the virus, as per research by the US health authorities. Among the children who have been infected with the virus, most infected children ave mild symptoms or no symptoms at all.

The development comes amid constant pressure from the US officials who are eager to fuly repooen schools as soon as possible even as the cases continue to mount in the countru at a significant rate.

Meanwhile, Moderna has said that 17.8 million adults in the United States have received its vaccine doses, ahead of the country stepping up its inoculation program against the coronavirus.

The United States has currently immunized around 2.2 million people per day, whole almost 65 per cent of Americans and older have had at least their first shot.

The US also has approved vaccines from Pfizer and Johnson & Johnson.
