Navratri 2025: Are You Fasting? Here’s Why You Must Avoid Heavy Night Meals To Protect Your Digestive System

During Navratri 2025, experts warn that eating heavy meals at night after fasting all day can harm digestion and slow metabolism. Light, balanced meals and proper hydration are recommended to stay healthy while observing the fast.

Sharad Navratri 2025 begins tomorrow (September 22) and devotees across the country are gearing up for nine days of fasting and prayer (till October 2). While fasting is spiritually rewarding, health experts warn that certain eating habits during this period can strain the digestive system and slow down metabolism.

Many people eat only fruits during the day and then consume heavier meals at night, such as potato-sago khichdi, water chestnut flour halwa, or bottle gourd preparations. While this is common, nutritionists say it can cause indigestion, acidity, and fatigue if done repeatedly over nine days.

Navratri 2025: Expert Tips For Healthy Fasting

As quoted by Daninik Tribune, Divya Malik (Senior Consultant in Dietetics and Nutrition at Apollo Spectra Hospital, Delhi) explains, “Fasting for nine days, not eating anything all day and eating a heavy meal once at night, puts pressure on the digestive system. Metabolism can also slow down because eating large meals at one time after a period of starvation makes it difficult for the body to burn calories properly.”

To stay healthy, she recommends eating light and balanced meals throughout the day and drinking plenty of water. This helps maintain proper digestion, prevents heaviness, and keeps energy levels steady.

Khushboo Singh (a dietician at Noida District Hospital) advises, “Start the day with warm water and curry leaves. After this, you can eat light fruits and nuts for breakfast. Keep your food in the afternoon, evening, and night moderate and light in the same way.”

Maintain Health While Observing Navratri Fasts

By following these simple guidelines, devotees can enjoy a spiritually fulfilling Navratri without harming their health. Eating small, balanced meals, staying hydrated and avoiding sudden heavy night meals can support digestion, metabolism and overall well-being during the nine-day festival.
