Toothbrush Hygiene: Can Your Toilet’s Germs Reach Your Mouth? Health Coach Suggests Tips To Keep Your Oral Health In Perfect Shape

Toothbrush Hygiene: There is absolutely no denying the fact that the bathroom is one of the most bacteria-packed environments in any home. And guess what, your toothbrush lies right there!

Toothbrush Hygiene: When we talk about oral hygiene, most of us focus on brushing twice a day, flossing regularly and using mouthwash. However, most of us forget the hygiene of the toothbrush itself. Surprisingly, your toothbrush is an essential come when it comes to maintain oral health and it may become a breeding ground for harmful microorganisms if not properly cared for.

In fact, studies have shown that a single toothbrush could harbour up to 100 million bacteria. Yes, you read that right! This includes potentially harmful microbes such as E. coli, fungal mould and streptococcus.

Toothbrush Hygiene-The Hidden Risk in Your Bathroom

There is absolutely no denying the fact that the bathroom is one of the most bacteria-packed environments in any home. And guess what, your toothbrush lies right there! Every time you flush with the lid open, a storm of microscopic droplets get released into the air. These droplets are capable of travelling several feet and settle on nearby surfaces, including your toothbrush. This means that bacteria from the toilet bowl can land directly on the bristles you later put into your mouth.

Ways To Correct

  • One of the best ways to treat your toothbrush is to disinfect it in a mix of warm water and white vinegar once a week. The antimicrobial properties of vinegar help in reducing the load of bacteria without introducing harsh chemicals.
  • Ideally, you should expose your toothbrush for about 15 minutes in direct sunlight once every week. This would help in killing bacteria that may be lingering on the toothbrush’s bristles. To get started, you first need to wash your toothbrush and then place it in a dry and clean spot where it can receive direct and ample sunlight.
  • As a general rule, replace your toothbrush every 2 to 3 months.
  • Opt for a ventilated cover made from safe materials like silicone or BPA-free plastic.
