UK approves emergency use authorization of Pfizer/BioNTech covid-19 vaccine

The United Kingdom became first western country on Wednesday to approve emergency use authorization of Pfizer-BioNTech’s covid-19 vaccine. According to the latest reports, the vaccine doses will be rolled out from next week.

The emergency authorization has raised hope across the globe in the fight against covid-19 pandemic which has claimed millions of lives worldwide.

“The Government has today accepted the recommendation from the independent Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) to approve Pfizer-BioNTech’s COVID-19 vaccine for use,” the government said.“The vaccine will be made available across the UK from next week,” it added.

Albert Bourla, Pfizer CEO, called it a historic moment for which they have been working since the inception of the pandemic.

“Today’s emergency use authorisation in the UK marks a historic moment in the fight against Covid-19. This authorisation is a goal we have been working toward since we first declared that science will win, and we applaud the MHRA for their ability to conduct a careful assessment and take timely action to help protect the people of the UK.

Pfizer had applied for emergency use authorization in the United States and the United Kingdom following its study analysis result that showed the vaccine to be 95 per cent effective against the covid-19 infection.

Earlier during the day, Pfizer has also applied for emergency authorisation across EU.

Meanwhile, US FDA will announce its decision on vaccine on December 10 after holding a meeting with vaccine and virus experts.

Pfizer has said that it has 50 million doses of vaccine which are ready to be rolled out in the market. The UK, which has ordered 40 million doses, will start vaccine drive from next week and is expected to receive 10 million doses by the end of 2020.
