UTI Infection: Millions of women across the world get affected by Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs) every year. While a big majority of these cases are mild and treatable, untreated or recurrent UTIs may significantly impact quality of life and even kidney-related complications.

In a recently shared video on Instagram, Vaidya Chhavi Yadav shares invaluable insights on Urinary Tract Infections and the primary UTI causes.

From an integrative health perspective, understanding UTIs requires more than simply identifying bacteria. Lifestyle habits, hydration levels, immunity, hygiene practices, hormonal health, digestion and stress can all influence the body’s vulnerability to infection.

What Is a UTI Infection and Why Does It Happen?

A Urinary Tract Infection occurs when microorganisms, most commonly bacteria, enter the urinary system and multiply. The urinary tract includes the kidneys, ureters, bladder and urethra. Most infections involve the lower urinary tract, especially the bladder and urethra.

The majority of UTIs are caused by Escherichia coli (E. coli), a bacterium that is normally found in the intestines. These bacteria can travel from the anal area to the urethra and eventually reach the bladder. Women are more prone to UTIs because their urethra is shorter, making it easier for bacteria to reach the bladder.

Several factors can increase the risk of developing a UTI:

  • Poor hydration
  • Holding urine for long periods
  • Poor intimate hygiene
  • Sexual activity
  • Diabetes
  • Weak immunity
  • Menopause-related hormonal changes
  • Pregnancy
  • Use of certain contraceptives
  • Urinary catheter use
  • Kidney stones

Urinary Infections And Ayurveda

In Ayurveda, urinary infections are often associated with an imbalance in “Pitta dosha,” which governs heat and metabolism in the body. Excess body heat, spicy foods, dehydration, stress and digestive disturbances are believed to aggravate inflammation in the urinary tract. Interestingly, modern medicine also recognizes that dehydration and chronic inflammation may increase susceptibility to infections.

Common Symptoms Of UTI Infections

UTI symptoms may include:

  • Burning Sensation During Urination
  • Frequent Urge to Urinate
  • Cloudy or Strong-Smelling Urine
  • Pelvic or Lower Abdominal Pain
  • Fever and Fatigue

If the infection spreads toward the kidneys, symptoms may include fever, chills, nausea, fatigue and back pain.

UTI Infection Treatment In Ayurveda

The health practitioner may recommend a medical history review and urine testing to identify bacteria, white blood cells and blood in the urine. In more severe or recurrent cases, a urine culture is recommended. Antibiotics remain the standard and most effective treatment for bacterial UTIs. Increased fluid intake helps flush bacteria from the urinary tract.

An experienced Ayurveda practitioner may typically focus on reducing inflammation, improving hydration, strengthening digestion, supporting immunity and correcting lifestyle patterns that contribute to recurrent infections.
